You are hereby ordered to hold an election!

Bury residents are being reminded that they have until 20 April to ensure they are registered to vote in May’s General Election.

People must be on the electoral register if they are to have their say in choosing an MP for either Bury North or Bury South.

Election day is Thursday 7 May, the same day that the local elections for Bury Council take place.

Councillor Michelle Wiseman, the Mayor of Bury, this week received the official writs from the Palace of Westminster. These told her that Parliament has been dissolved, and ‘command’ her to call an election to elect an MP for the Bury North and Bury South constituencies.

Cllr Wiseman, who is the returning officer for the General Election in Bury, said: “Voting is democracy in action, when everyone – young or old, rich or poor, male or female – gets to decide who runs the country and the council.

“I urge everyone to have their say in these elections, but you have to be on the register first to make your mark. If you need to register to vote, simply go to https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote – it’ll only take a minute.”
