Young people’s sporty invitation to summer

Young people in Bury are being urged to take part in a huge range of sporting and positive lifestyle events during the long summer holidays.

The Sportivate programme is part of the Manchester-wide Safe4Summer campaign, designed to offer young people the chance to experience a variety of fun activities in their local area.

The Safe4Summer partners include Bury Council, Police, Fire Service and Early Break, who have obtained funding from Sport England’s ‘Sportivate’ scheme to put on the sessions. They will run every Thursday during the school summer holidays starting on 24 July and young people will have the opportunity to take part in sports including dance, football, rounders, cricket and extreme Frisbee. The first session will be free, and after that sessions will cost just £1.

In addition to the Sportivate activities, the Fire Service and Bury Police are putting on caged soccer
sessions on Tuesday afternoons in parks around the borough and a Friday night project is planned for the Redvales in August.

Councillor Jane Lewis, cabinet member for communities and culture, said: “As well as encouraging
people to get involved in local activities and events, Safe4Summer offers advice about personal safety and encourages people to take responsibility for their actions and think about how those might affect other people. Through Safe4Summer we aim to show young people how many great opportunities there are to have fun in and around Bury this summer.”
