London homeless photo contest at St Paul’s Cathedral
One hundred people affected by homelessness will receive single-use cameras in a unique photography contest at St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday 3 July.
The theme of the contest is ‘My London’, and participants have three days to finish the film and return the cameras.
The contest is being run by the social enterprise Cafe Art. Photography training will be given by volunteers from The Royal Photographic Society. Fuji is also supporting the project with cameras.
Dr Michael Pritchard FRPS, Director-General of The Royal Photographic Society, said: 'This is the third year that The Society is supporting this unique My London photography competition which continues to have such a positive impact on all participants. The Society is pleased to lend its support to Cafe Art by providing members to help with the camera hand-outs and various Workshops. The resultant images and stories in the annual calendar and exhibition are truly inspirational, and proves that art and photography can help raise an individual's confidence and sense of worth, as well as generating a greater awareness of the problem of homelessness.'
Paul Ryan from Café Art said, ‘The goals are to provide people affected by homelessness an outlet to express their talent and creativity. We will have an exhibition and are also putting some of the photographs into the annual calendar which will be sold by people affected by homelessness. The calendar part of the project will help people earn an income and work for themselves and also raise money for art projects. It has raised over £45,000 for the participants and art groups over the past two years.’
Photographs from the contest will be displayed in a week-long exhibition at Spitalfields Market in October, where the calendar will also be sold.
