9 yr old boy walks from Oakham to London for other children (115 miles)

Schoolboy Joel Condron, 9, is spending this Autumn half-term walking 115 miles from Oakham in Rutland to London to raise money for Save the Children to help kids in need. He is selling some of his cherished Lego and Hot Wheels car collections to start the ball rolling.

Joel was inspired to act after repeatedly seeing footage on TV of children crossing into Europe from war zones in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Speaking from his home in Oakham, Joel said "I have seen stories on telly about other children that have had to leave their home towns and go on dangerous journeys because there are bad people around that are fighting in wars. The news calls them refugee children. Some of these kids have had to walk a long way sometimes without their parents just to find a safe place to live. A lot of them are even younger than me".

He added "I like football, playing my guitar, Minecraft and Lego. I go to school each day where I learn, play and hang out with my mates. I'm an ordinary 9 yr old English kid living in a safe town. I want to do something to help them so that people can give money to help these children get food, water and somewhere warm and safe to sleep".

All money raised will be donated to Save the Children, who work with kids in 120 countries, including in the UK, that need a bit of help.

Joel continued "All I'm taking are the clothes I'll be wearing, a tent, sleeping bag and a toothbrush. My Dad will be with me and will have a phone just in case of emergencies. We will have no money, food or water. We are hoping that people will help us along the way, to show that people are kind to strangers and will help them out when they need it".

The walk take place from 24th-31st October 2015, and Joel will be covering 15 miles a day. Joel will leave his bedroom on Day 1 and arrive at the The Kindertransport statue at Liverpool Street Station 8 days later.
