Press release -

Nude snowfights, a micropig on a lead, and guests arriving by helicopter … caravanners share their stories

Nude snowfights, a man sitting on his chemical toilet under a tree in an orchard, and a variety of unusual animals being taken for a walk are just some of things seen by caravanners on their holidays.

Caravan insurance specialist Cover4Caravans.co.uk surveyed 400 of its customers to understand more about their caravan habits, the things they cannot live without when away, as well as the more unusual things they have seen on their travels.

The study revealed that:

  • 56% of respondents used their ‘van more than 5 times a year, equating to over 21 nights away;
  • 20% of caravanners have taken their tourer overseas, with 70% going to France;
  • mainland Spain attracted 30% of caravanners;
  • 28% said that the one thing they cannot travel without is their dog;
  • beer, wine, a well-stocked fridge and a comfy pillow were other “must-haves”;
  • while the average customer travels 150-200 miles in their ‘van, one customer had been 2000 miles on one trip – but didn’t say where;
  • North Yorkshire, Norfolk, Cornwall and Devon were named as favourite “go-to” places.

When asked: “What is the strangest thing you have seen while away?” some of the (printable) answers included:

  • nude campers washing themselves at cold water communal tap;
  • a wedding couple arriving at the caravan site in a helicopter;
  • an inflatable hot tub in an awning;
  • a flashing condom machine within sight of the caravan windows when on the pitch;
  • nude snowfights;
  • a variety of animals being taken for a walk on a lead – including parrots, a micropig, and pet cats;
  • a man reading a book, sat on his chemical toilet, under a tree in an orchard.
