Extensive modernisation of group 3 vessels

With the refurbishment of the ’Esvagt Preserver’, five of ESVAGT’s eight group 3 vessels have received an extensive life-extension refit at the shipyard in Søby.

ESVAGT’s group 3 vessels include both the oldest and smallest craft in the fleet – but that doesn’t mean that they do not need the same care and attention.

Many of the vessels in the group have been given a life-extending refit at the Søby shipyard, where technical inspector, Svend Aage Korup, supervises and coordinates the work.

“Needs vary from ship to ship but what they all have in common is that modern requirements for performance are very different today than when the vessels were built; in terms of fuel economy and comfort,” says Svend Aage Korup.

The latest refit of the ’Esvagt Preserver’, illustrates this point rather well.

“One of the biggest changes on the ’Esvagt Preserver’ is the new forward thrust azimuth, which meets requirements for fuel economy and emissions as well as comfort for the crew and guests. The azimuth can provide all the power needed 80 percent of the time and saves having to have the main engine running. This saves on emissions, noise and vibrations,” says Svend Aage Korup.

Another example is the rebuilding of the wheelhouse to make space for a sofa arrangement.

”The ’Esvagt Preserver’ often sails with service technicians on board and they would like to have somewhere on the bridge where they can see out. This has now been provided,” he says.
