Press release -

"We have many years of experience on every vessel"

Svend Bech Poulsen, Captain of the ’Esvagt Charlie’: "You shouldn't be afraid of the sea but you do need to respect it!”

"We are one big family at ESVAGT. I have been here for 10 years and even though many new vessels and colleagues have joined the company in that time, the feeling is still the same: We like it here, we like each other and we work together to solve the challenges in our daily work. And we all think that we are working on ESVAGT's flagship – even though the ’Esvagt Charlie’ is one of the oldest and smallest vessels in the fleet.

There is a special sense of freedom working on group 3 vessels. When we change over shifts, we do it across all the vessels and plan our rotations ourselves. That means that we are not two teams working on shift – we are one big team!

This approach permeates our safety work too. The work we do is not without danger but if you are really good at it and are trained for it, you can work with the risk if you look after yourself and your colleagues. We know that we don't have chancers on board our vessels and that means a great deal. When you have a job that can be risky, it is good to know that you are surrounded by people who are competent and who are specialists. You shouldn't be afraid of the sea but you do need to respect it!

You can't just put seven new men onboard and get an ESVAGT vessel out of it. Nobody can sail with this equipment and perform these tasks like we can because we have learnt it inside out. We have many years of experience on every vessel – training is almost like passing on knowledge from father to son. That makes a real difference when a situation becomes critical. We can launch a Fast Rescue Boat into the water in just one minute regardless of the conditions. It is fantastic to see the calm in which tasks are performed when someone presses the man overboard button. Everyone knows what they have to do and everyone knows their role. It is fascinating to see - every single time”.
