Press release -

Appeal for witnesses and dash cam footage following a report of sexual assault in city centre at weekend

We are appealing for information and witnesses following a report of a serious sexual assault in Southampton City Centre over the weekend.

We would like to speak to anyone who was in the Portland Terrace and Western Esplanade area between 4am and 6.30am on Sunday, December 16.

We are investigating a report of a 20 year old woman being seriously sexually assaulted in the vicinity of the grassy area between Asda and the NCP Car Park.

Were you walking or driving in that area or did you use the NCP Car Park or Marlands Car Park?

If you were in the area, we would like to speak with you. We would also like to hear from anyone who has dash cam footage recorded in that vicinity during those times.

There is no evidence at this time to suggest this incident is linked to a report of a rape in Riverside Park on December 2.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team continues to carry out regular patrols in the area and is undertaking ongoing work relating to public open spaces in the city.

We would like to remind people again to follow common sense advice and remain vigilant, especially when walking alone in the dark. Try to stick to busy, well-lit areas, stick with friends, look after each other.

It’s really important to stay alert and be aware of your surroundings and remind friends and family to do the same. Be wary of people around you, if you think you might be being followed seek help or a safe place if there is one nearby.

We work in partnership with Yellow Door. Yellow Door is a registered charity that collaboratively work with the police in providing a range of support for victims for this type of crime. For more information www.yellowdoor.org.uk
