Appeal for witnesses following fatal collision in Alton

We’re appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Alton in the early hours of this morning.

We were called to the A31, near to the Chawton roundabout, at around 1.20am following a collision involving a van and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a 37-year-old man, was seriously injured and taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. He died a short time later.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The van involved was a white Mercedes Sprinter van.

Investigations into the collision are ongoing and we are keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling in that area at the time of the incident.

The driver of the van, a 55-year-old man, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He remains in custody at this time.
