Man sentenced to 30 months in a young offenders institution after an elderly woman was robbed in Fareham’s town centre.

A 20 year-old man has been sent to a young offenders institution for 30 months after an 86 year-old woman was robbed in Fareham’s town centre.

The victim had her bank card taken from her when her handbags were grabbed from her arm on West Street at 4:40pm on Sunday 9 December 2018.

The card was later used to spend £5.54 in McDonalds and £36.46 in McColls.

The woman wasn’t hurt.

Sergio Santos of Williams Close in Gosport was later charged with robbery and two counts of fraud, which he admitted at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday 18 January.

On Friday 15 February he was sentenced to a total of 30 months in a young offenders institution at the same court.

Investigating officer, DC Daryl Hillier said: “This was a crime involving a vulnerable 86 year-old woman, who could not defend herself. I hope that today’s sentence provides some closure to the victim on this traumatic experience.

“I’d like to thank the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Fareham, which helped this investigation. PCSO Ann Adams, especially, as her efforts were instrumental in securing this conviction.”
