Man sentenced to four years in prison following burglaries in Gosport.

A 49 year-old man has been sentenced to a total of four years in prison following three burglaries in Gosport.

At some point between Wednesday September 26 and the following day jewellery was stolen from a flat on the Anchorage.

On Wednesday October 24 items of clothing were stolen from a house on Peel Road.

On Monday 29 October jewellery was stolen from a house on Monckton Road in Gosport.

As part of our investigation 49 year-old Paul Anderson of Fawcett Road in Croydon was charged with the three burglary offences and admitted the charges at Portsmouth Crown Court.

In addition he had been charged in relation to three burglaries in the London area, which were dealt with at the same court.

A further ten burglary offences and a theft in the Gosport area were taken into account by the court. These were at:

• Dimensions hairdressers on North Cross Street on October 1.
• Fox and Sons estate agents on Gosport High Street on October 14.
• A house on Molesworth Road August 21.
• A house on Rectory Close on September 5.
• A house on Green Road on October 4.
• A house on Grove Avenue on October 24.
• A house on Peel Road on October 24.
• A house on Elson Lane on August 21.
• A house on St Thomas’ Road on October 17.
• A house on Blake Road on September 10.
• A theft from a boat at Gosport Marina on August 19.

On Friday 15 February Anderson was sentenced at the same court to a total of four years in prison.

Police Staff Investigator Catherine Cole said: “Anderson was arrested on October 29 following various enquiries, subsequent CCTV footage provided to us helped us to secure a charge. A number of addresses were burgled by Anderson in Gosport during the autumn, this sentence reflects the seriousness of his offending and I hope that it provides some resolution for all of his victims”.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind people of the following crime prevention advice:

• Shut all windows and lock them when you are not using the room, at night, and when you leave your property
• Lock all front and rear doors at night and when you are out. If you have a UPVC door with a multi-point lock ensure you lift the handle and lock it with the key.
• Put all car keys and other keys out of sight and not in reach of windows and letterboxes. It doesn't take much for the keys to be hooked through the letterbox.
• Leave a light on so your home looks occupied if you are going out for the evening. If you head out while it is still daylight and won't be back till after dark then a timer switches (available from most DIY stores) can be useful in turning your lights, radios and other appliances on at a set time before you get back.
• Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.
• Do not leave ladders and garden tools in your garden; lock them away in your shed.
• Have an intruder alarm system installed by an approved contractor. Ensure a visible alarm box is attached to the outside of your home. Also consider fitting security lighting.
• Use door chains and spy holes to give you extra security if someone knocks on your door. Never be afraid to turn people away. If you have concerns about anyone who has come to your door call the police.
