Here comes the sun… LLA’s recommendations for a stress-free start to the holidays

Summer has arrived, which means it’s time for the ritual tension of watching Murray at Wimbledon, reveling in burnt BBQ sausages and packing your bags for a summer holiday to an exciting destination.

The LLA team is looking forward to welcoming the millions of passengers who will use the Airport this summer, whether they are off to catch some rays on a beach, explore new places, or simply catch up with friends and family.

To make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible here are our top travel tips.

1. Travelling to the Airport by car? Leave in good time and pre-book your parking space

We’re now entering the busy summer period and if you’re planning to park at the Airport, we strongly recommend that you book early to guarantee a space.

If you don’t wish to pre-book we would advise arriving early in case your first choice of car park is unavailable.

2. Consider public transport

During the busy summer get-away heavy traffic is expected on the roads leading to and from the Airport. Fortunately we have many public transport options including train services which take as little as 30 minutes from central London. There are also many bus routes with 400 services arriving and departing each day.

3. Check in online with your airline

Online check-in with your airline can save you time and money and is normally available 24 hours ahead of the flight’s scheduled departure time. Once you’re checked in you can print your own boarding pass, then simply drop your luggage at your airline’s ‘Bag drop’ or check in desks. If travelling with hand luggage only, you can proceed straight to security.

4. Don’t forget your travel documents

You’ll need your passport and you’ll need to make sure it doesn’t expire any time soon. If it does, check that it will still be valid for the destination which you’re travelling to. Don’t forget, children under the age of 12 also need a children’s ID or passport in order to travel by plane.

5. Prepare your hand baggage for the security check

Wherever possible you should pack liquids in your hold baggage as there are restrictions on the amount you can take in your hand baggage. If you need to bring liquids or gels in your hand baggage then you’ll need to comply with the Department for Transport’s guidelines.
