London Luton Airport experiences busiest November and prepares for record Christmas

London Luton Airport (LLA) experienced an 11.5% increase in passenger numbers in November compared to the year before, as more than 1.1 million passengers travelled through the airport.

The airport is now preparing for its busiest ever Christmas period, with most departures expected on 28th December. The most popular destinations are likely to be Amsterdam, Budapest and Bucharest, in addition to winter sun holidays to the Canary Islands.

Passengers travelling through the airport in December will benefit from an upgraded terminal, which includes an expanded security search area and over 30 high street and luxury stores, which will help ensure that passengers’ journeys are easier, quicker and more enjoyable.

Nick Barton, CEO of LLA, said: “We are pleased that more passengers are choosing to fly from LLA, both for business and leisure. We have worked hard to ensure that our passengers’ journeys can be as efficient and comfortable as possible throughout our redevelopment, which we will complete this month.”

From 2019, passengers travelling by rail will be able to use Oyster and contactless cards on train services between London and the airport terminal, making it even easier to reach the airport.

LLA’s top travel tips for customers for Christmas fliers:

  • Make sure you allow plenty of time to travel to the airport and clear check-in and security, particularly in the event of bad weather
  • Always check with your airline for the status of your flight
  • Make sure you’re prepared for hand baggage security checks. Avoid taking wrapped presents in hand luggage, toy weapons, party poppers and fireworks aren’t permitted, and jams and preserves must comply with the 100ml liquid rules
  • Arriving passengers should check onward travel connections as public transport services may be reduced over the festive period
