Mother's Response to Health Select Committee

I'm the mother of a baby girl and I appeared on the News at Ten last month in relation to my submissions to the health select committee. Sugar means our children now won't live as long as us! I set up Level Cert (www.levelcert.com) the international certification scheme for low sugar food and drink to do something about that. If you are covering this story I'd be happy to talk to you about it.

I wanted to draw your attention to a “sugar labelling” scheme that is getting some coverage (Level International). A BBC Documentary is on the cards and the scheme’s Director (Rend Platings) has set up an international certification scheme that gives credibility to a company’s “Low Sugar” position – in the same way Vegetarian Society does for Vegetarian foods. She is keen to link developments in technology and product development with the food industry and help companies promote low sugar products.

Whilst much of the detail is still to be worked out she has already achieved a significant amount of media coverage – her background is marketing and she has a compelling “Mum” angle. For example she was interviewed on the BBC News at 10 just after Jamie Oliver and before Ian Wright (22/10). I have given some other links below.

The BBC want to do a documentary including her pitching the scheme to the Food Industry at Food Matters Live (17th November); Talking to a retailer(s) about the scheme and getting a labelled product(s) on the shelf in January. The programme will air in February.

The BBC will be sending out letters to retailers in the next couple of weeks “challenging” them to take part. She has also spoken to the FDF and is trying to contact the BRC.

I have met her and discussed the scheme independently so if you have any immediate questions I may be able to answer them.

Level is the international sugar certification scheme for low sugar food and drink. The scheme will to promote low sugar products, and like other certifications (e.g., rainforest alliance, fairtrade, vegetarian), help customers quickly recognise that a certain standard has been met. In this case the standard is that there really is no added sugar and the products are also low in free sugars.
