Press release -

THE LONDON MINT OFFICE PARTNERS WITH IN FLANDERS FIELDS MUSEUM WITH AN EXCLUSIVE COIN TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENARY OF THE END OF WORLD WAR I.

The London Mint Office is a trusted and respected partner for a large number of British coin collectors and mints across the world, and prides itself in putting history into the hands of its customers. The In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres presents the interactive and very human story of the First World War in the West Flanders front region, which involved people from five continents and more than fifty countries and cultures.

The official World War I centenary ‘At The Going Down of the Sun’ coinhas been issued as an everlasting act of remembrance, and recalls the famous ‘Ode of Remembrance’ taken from Laurence Binyon’s timeless poem ‘For The Fallen’. The coin has been designed by acclaimed artist and sculptor Paul Day, whose high relief sculptures in terracotta, resin and bronze have been exhibited widely in Europe and attract considerable interest from both the public and media alike.

His Battle of Britain monument, which is currently sited on the Victoria Embankment in London, was his first monument to be sited in his home country. Since then, several other monuments in London have followed including his most recent Afghanistan and Iraq memorial, which was unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2017.

Falklands Conflict veteran Simon Weston CBE, Military Ambassador for The London Mint Office said: “The issue of the centenary commemorative coin in this significant landmark year of the end of the Great War is a fitting way to launch The London Mint Office’s partnership with In Flanders Fields Museum, a very poignant and lasting memorial that highlights the very human experience of the many who fell on both sides. We will remember them.”

In his ambassadorial role for The London Mint Office this year, Simon will front a TV campaign for the coin, amongst numerous other activities.
