Matrix Telematics tracked an ex-RAF serviceman as he cycled from London to Redcar

Altrincham, 21st June 2016 - Altrincham based company Matrix Telematics, a leading provider of vehicle tracking telematics devices and software, provided ex-RAF serviceman Andy McCleod with one of their devices to plot his journey as he cycled 283 miles, raising vital funds for The Royal British Legion.

In the early hours of Sunday 19th June, Andy McCleod embarked an amazing challenge: cycling from the cenotaph in London to the cenotaph in Redcar, 283 miles away. He completed this amazing feat in a gruelling 20 hours and 15 minutes, arriving in Redcar at 11.30pm. Throughout the journey, which he completed unaided, he called at 5 cenotaphs and carried a poppy wreath on his back, which he placed on the cenotaph in Redcar. Also on board was one of Matrix Telematics’ GPS devices, which meant that he could be followed in real-time by friends, family and supporters who logged-on to the dedicated website. On being tracked McCleod said, ‘The tracker was a godsend really, it put my wife's mind at rest as she could follow my progress, as well as my friends who wanted to check I wasn’t cheating!’.

This unique opportunity for an Altrincham based company to track this unusual journey was kicked off by a chance conversation between a friend of McCleod’s and Matrix Telematics’ Managing Director, Geoff Ball. As a result, the team at Matrix Telematics, who usually track cars, vans and heavy plant machinery, provided McCleod with one of their devices. The battery-powered Matrix Asset Tracking Unit was configured to give position updates every 10 minutes,meaning that Andy could be located on a digital map at every stage of his journey. This provided an extra safety net on his solo-journey. On taking on this unusual tracking assignment Ball said, ‘We were delighted to get involved with Andy’s fundraising cycle journey. From a technical point of view we pride ourselves in being able to track anything that moves – and the Matrix Telematics team were more than happy to help for such a good cause’.
