Medical Realities Launches First VR Interactive Surgical Training Module

The highly anticipated worldwide launch of the groundbreaking Medical Realities Virtual Reality Surgical Training App takes place this Monday; for the first time, users will be able to experience this revolutionary, immersive, teaching and educational VR application for themselves.

Medical Realities is using Virtual Reality to train and educate medical students and surgeons in training in surgical procedures. We are creating a ‘Virtual Library’ of over 100 x VR 360º Interactive, Nonlinear Surgical Training and Teaching Modules that can be viewed on all types of VR Headsets. This allows us to deliver a new immersive learning experience, offering students, doctors and surgeons, around the world, the ability to see in 360º Interactive VR un-obscured views of operations and to learn directly from world-class specialist surgeons.

The module will be launched on Google Play and will be available soon on other platforms, including on the Gear VR and iOS stores.

The first interactive module contains interactive anatomy, pathophysiology, self-assessment, and operations that can be viewed in full 360, that have been created using state of the art equipment.

In 2016, Dr. Ahmed, Co-founder of Medical Realities performed the world’s first live-stream of a virtual reality operation recorded in 360 degrees at The Royal London Hospital. The procedure, which involved the removal of cancerous tissue from the bowel of a 68-year-old man, was watched live by 55000 students and trainees around the world from 140 countries.

These interactive educational experience are designed for the global use and will not only give unparalleled access to the new surgical learning resources and techniques but also aim to have a hugely positive impact for medical personnel around the world, especially those in developing nations.

Steve Dann, the Co-Founder, and CEO of Medical Realities said “This time last year I was proud to be part a world’s first, the 360º VR live streaming of an operation performed by my co-founder in Medical Realities Professor Shafi Ahmed. Now I am equally proud and excited to be launching our Interactive VR Surgical Training app this week.”

“I believe that this use of Virtual Reality is the start of a revolution in teaching, especially within the medical sector and that it will have a major impact in training and education, not only in this country but around the world.”

“Having been involved in teaching medical students and training surgeons for over 20 years, virtual reality will have the ability to disrupt conventional surgical teaching, to reach a wider audience and to improve standards of care across the globe. I’m sure these technologies will enable us to provide equitable surgical training for everyone that needs it. Future doctors will need modern methods of teaching and VR has already captured their imagination” – Professor Shafi Ahmed Co-Founder and CMO

In January 2017, Medical Realities joined the Mayor of London’s International Business Program. Deputy Mayor for Business Rajesh Agrawal, said: “The Mayor and I look forward to working with Medical Realities, to build new relationships, attract investment and show the entire continent that London is Open and the best city in the world to do business with.”

The current model of training medical students has hardly changed for over a hundred and fifty years and still involves 'peering over the surgeon's shoulder', this approach is simply not scalable. Our company Medical Realities is using new technologies such as Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality to address the lack of surgically trained practitioners and bring first class surgical training to anybody, anywhere in the world.
