Press Release
Android iteration of Sky Go arrives
Feb 22, 2012 08:00 GMTSky Go, the subscription TV provider's on demand video service, is now available for smartphones running the Android operating system in the UK.
Sky Go lets you watch a selection of programmes at any time and also gives you access to live simulcasts of certain Sky channels. This list has been expanded to include Sky 1, Sky Arts 1 and even Sky Living, in order to promote the launch of the Android app.
If you have an iPhone 4S and a Sky subscription then you may already have been enjoying the Sky Go app on your iOS device, where it has been downloaded by large numbers of users. Meanwhile Android customers will no longer feel left out as they now have their own video streaming app from Sky to keep them entertained while they are out and about.
The main problem with rolling out Sky Go on Android is that Google's operating system can be found on a wide range of handsets with different amounts of processing power, different sized displays and different resolutions.
While the Samsung Galaxy S2 has a 4.3 inch display and the HTC Sensation XL has an even larger 4.7 inch screen, there are lower end models with screens measuring just three inches in size, which increased the amount of work which Sky had to carry out, to make the app as widely compatible as possible.
Sky spokesperson, Holly Knill, said that customers would now be able to watch the latest football coverage on Sky Sports, or one of HBO's catalogue of hits on Sky Atlantic, on their Android smartphone.
Not every Android mobile has been given support, but there is a comprehensive list of compatible devices which includes the aforementioned Galaxy S2, as well as the HTC Desire S.
It seems that as long as your handset has at least 1GHz of processing power, you should be able to get the Sky Go application up and running. Checking the Android Market should give you a better idea about compatibility.
There are now more ways to watch TV on your smartphone than ever before and the on demand nature of the Sky Go service and its contemporaries means that there is far more flexibility in the type of content that is available. You will of course need a Wi-Fi connection or a generous monthly data plan to make the most of Sky Go.
