Ocean Waste to Energy or Death to marine life as we know it...............

Hot topic, but unfortunately starting to get a bit repetitive and becoming “a norm”. Just like the little girl collecting water from 5 miles away and the images of children with fly’s in their eyes or the donkey carrying bricks – people just start to turn the telly over, thinking it will just go away.

So what have we today to report on, turtles trapped in nets, whales full of rubbish bags, cutting open dead birds full of bits of plastic or a fish that swam in to a coca cola bottle and grew to big to get out ! the list goes on and on - its terrible, but dont turn over just yet, read on.........

In his words; its like dog mess, everyone knows its there, everyone avoids it and moans about. Laws Legislations, fines, warning signs, campaigns, studies, impact groups – but at the end of the day it still takes a man with a shovel, and that’s us ORM, the men with a shovel, albeit a big shovel !

Ocean Resource Management are converting a bulk storage/tanker in to a complete floating waste processing factory.

Paul with his 30 years experience in the waste industry recognised the issues and provided the answer, yes it would cost billions of pounds to collect the waste and bring it to shore for processing, so why bother, and who is going to pay?

The problem is the sizes of the waste, states Paul, a million empty pop bottles would fill a ships hold, dragging out plastic bags and mixed waste would soon fill a ship, a 1000 plastic beer creates would fill an articulated lorry, but not if you granulate them first ! the same with lost wood loads, floating pallets, trees and foliage; if you process them into biomass fuel pellets, whilst at sea, it makes it easy to transport, plus they have a value.

Paul has found machinery and equipment to “recycle” just about everything you can pull out of the ocean, but as he tried to warn Slat at the Ocean Clean up organisation – DONT WASTE MONEY BRINGING THE WASTE ASHORE. (he hasn’t listened) process it at sea.

The £5 Million investment gets a fully converted ship with a “state of the art” automated waste separation system, a granulating plant for the hard plastic, a pyrolosis plant for converting the light weight plastic back in to oil and anything BIO goes straight to the biomass fuel pellet machine.

ORM can clean up the oceans at a profit –its not rocket science, people have just complicated things, says Paul. You need to step back and look at things differently. NASA spent $25 million developing a pen to work in space, the Russians took a pencil.

The Ocean Clean up organisations system, Ok they are doing something about the problem, but is it the correct way? im not sure says Paul. If I had £30 Million over the last 2 years and another 2 in front I would have six ships and would have processed over million tons of waste by now and processed at a PROFIT !

The Ocean Clean up’s floating pipe and net; will it affect migration routes, concentrate feeding areas, capture any turtles and other marine life whilst guiding them up the “conveyors of death”. Believe me, You mess with nature and she bites you back warns Paul. Copepods & Phytoplankton float on the world’s oceans as well as plastic.

So when the coral eggs and fish eggs are in the wrong place at the wrong time and you haven’t got North Atlantic cod as the have headed south, remember I told you so. Copepods are a group of small crustaceans found in the sea and nearly every freshwater habitat Phytoplankton absorb energy from the Sun and nutrients from the water to produce their own food. In the process of photosynthesis, phytoplankton release molecular oxygen (O. ₂) into the water. It is estimated that between 50% and 85% of the world's oxygen is produced via phytoplankton photosynthesis.

Scoop them up Slat and marine life will die, with us to follow, its the bottom of the food chain !

Paul goes on to add about the ORM shore party; our vessel has a landing craft so we can also operate on the beach’s. Once we have established what’s got to be done we land the heavy equipment on the beach and transport the waste back to the ship for processing – its surprising how much you can clear in a day. The ship will also have a med lab and research facility/school A) somewhere to treat the marine life and birds, whilst also collecting and processing ocean data.

To fund the operation; I don’t blame the likes of Mc Donald’s, but they have “added” to the problem by making extra profit from using plastic, so perhaps they can help, 36,000 stores in over 120 countries ! I will ask for help, but if they say no, it will be another great story when I bring their waste back to their head office lol at least Coca Cola admit a part and are making plans, we all love the Coca Cola transport, have a ship ? £5M; you said you will do something, lets do it.

I have a “hot list” says Paul, A list of companies who can afford to help, who somehow have played a part in all this by saving on manufacturing out of plastic and increasing profits, well can we have some back?
