Many students not considering their graduate career when choosing their university course

According to a new survey by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation: JobsOutlook, the overall outlook still looks positive, however the confidence of UK graduate recruiters has dipped since last months high.

The REC’s barometer of employer confidence has dipped this month; however this isn’t to do with employers concerns about their own organisations’ performance, but more to do with the external economic climate.

Yet good news for graduates as many employers state they still plan to employ more staff over the next three to 12 month periods. The percentage of employers looking to employ more staff has fallen slightly since April as bosses assess their need for additional staff whilst considering the economic climate.

The report still found that many employers are failing to find suitably skilled staff that they need in the areas of IT and telecommunications, engineering and technical skills.

Commenting on the latest figures, the REC’s Director of Research, Roger Tweedy, said: “Employers took on more staff during the first quarter of this year, but confidence is fragile and bad news about GDP growth and from the eurozone will contribute to them feeling a little more cautious about the future.

“Demand for staff is higher in certain sectors and bosses tell us that despite the current rate of unemployment they still predict they will find it hard to fill the vacancies they have for engineers and skilled IT and technical staff.”
