Press release -

Watching wildlife on the waterways.

Taking a holiday on a narrowboat isn’t the first thing a dedicated or budding naturalist might think of as an ideal way to see wildlife, but anyone who has enjoyed the inland waterways of the UK will know that there are few better ways of observing the natural world.

Canals and rivers have long been regarded as vitally important when ti comes to providing habitat for animals, birds, insects, plants, reptiles and fish. This habitat provides cover, food, water and a means of moving from one place to another in relative safety. As a result anyone using the canals and rivers of the UK are in the ideal location to see this diverse collection of wildlife in a relatively confined area.

There are many ways to explore the waterways network but few can be as comfortable as holidaying aboard a 5 star narrowboat hired from Kate Boats of Warwickshire. These quiet and slow moving traditionally styled boats glide through the countryside allowing those on board to get close to the wildlife with whom they share the waterways. The result are some spectral views of kingfishers, grey heron, dragonflies, frogs, newts, yellow irises and water lilies to name but a few.

What better way is there to enjoy a relaxing holiday within close proximity of this abundance of wildlife, and when you use one of Kate Boats fleet of high specification narrowboats you’ll have all the comforts of home in your floating hide. Hot and cold running water, showers, central heating for chilly nights, a fully equipped galley and mains power to allow you to recharge equipment such as phones and tablet computers.

The team at Kate Boats will make sure you are fully conversant with the boat and it’s systems to give you every opportunity to make the most of your holiday. And it doesn’t end there. If you need more support or help at any stage the team are just a call away giving you the peace of mind to relax and enjoy the wonderful British countryside from the best possible vantage point. And remember, you don’t have to be a wildlife expert to enjoy a holiday of this type. Activities as simple as feeding the ducks and swans that will inevitably find you when you moor up can provide the perfect introduction to a lifelong love of wildlife for children.

Many of the species you will see during your holiday are relatively common, but there are also rarer species that the Canal River Trust are asking you to look out for including the endearing water vole. To help them they are asking for you to record your observations by using an app they’ve developed. More information is available at https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/great-nature-watch So now all you need to do is download the app, book your holiday and remember to pack your binoculars and you too will be able to not only enjoy but to positively help to preserve the wildlife of the canals and rivers.
