Plantagon has signed a letter of intent with the Botkyrka municipality in Sweden for establishing a vertical greenhouse. Construction is planned to begin in 2012.
The project has received funding from the Swedish government's clean-tech initiative, the Delegation for Sustainable Cities. The first stage of the project is to further analyze the benefits of sustainable urban development that establishing a vertical greenhouse will result in.
"This is a terrific opportunity to concretize our concept, the Plantagon Greenhouse, a sustainable alternative to traditional cultivation, right here at home ground," says Hans Hassle, CEO of Plantagon International AB. ”It comes as a bit of a happy surprise, as we have traveled around the world to several cities that have shown interest in our concept, and we end up starting it right here, in the Stockholm area.”
The construction of a vertical greenhouse in Botkyrka will be one of the first of its kind in the forefront of "Urban Farming". It would attract stakeholders and visitors from around the world and be an important showcase for Swedish cleantech.
"Placing a vertical greenhouse in the municipality of Botkyrka will be in line with both municipal business and climate strategy" says Katarina Berggren, Mayor of Botkyrka. The finished greenhouse will be spherical and of approximately 60-70 meters in diameter. She continues: "This investment fits in well with our ongoing effort to promote a sustainable lifestyle in the northern parts of our county, and the greenhouse itself will be a visible landmark for the municipality at the entrance to Stockholm.".
Sweco is Plantagon’s manufacturing partner in the project, and will be closely involved in project implementation. Eva Nygren, CEO of Sweco Sweden:
"Our cooperation with Plantagon is exciting and challenging in many ways for our architects and engineers engaged in developing the technical solutions for the greenhouse . The great interest that the vertical greenhouse created in the Swedish pavilion at the World Expo in Shanghai was inspiring, and we look forward to further concretize our cooperation by participating in the Botkyrka project."
The conditions for the construction of a vertical greenhouse in Botkyrka will be analyzed during 2011, and the plan is to begin construction in the beginning of 2012.
In 2050, 80 percent of the world’s population will be living in towns and cities. Already, 80 per cent of the world’s farmland is being utilized.
