The Boston Bombings And the Waco Disaster Should Have Been Prevented

Better CCTV monitoring and the usage of sniffer dogs close to the finish line among other measures could have identified the bombs in Boston.  This would have saved both lives and property. The Waco disaster could have been prevented even more easily with appropriate risk management strategies and risk audits.  Companies, governments and event organizers all need to take a greater responsibility when it comes to risk management asserts Peter Karlsson from consulting firm Profits And People.

The biggest problem is to get these types of organizations to allocate enough funds towards risk management.  As we have seen recently, being stingy in these areas can be extremely expensive with loss of both human lives and property and not to mention the massive reputational damage. The total costs relating to what happened in Boston and Waco are enormous and totally inexcusable.

When organizations are faced with disasters like these, the first reaction is typically to start the political blaming game and this often hinders the process of improving the future situation.  Dealing with the political situation can be a total nightmare for the risk managers.

Prevention is always better than trying to come up with a cure in the aftermath, when it comes to risk management.  There were some very obvious risks that should have been identified and mitigated in the Boston bombings as well as in the Waco disaster according to Peter Karlsson.  A similar level of complacency when it comes to risk management can also be seen in the rest of the world and not just in the US.  People simply believe that this will never happen to them in their own country or in their hometown.
