Rock legend Kenney Jones brings music stars together to raise awareness of prostate cancer

The Small Faces’ and The Faces’ Kenney Jones will take to the stage at this year’s Rock ‘n’ Horsepower alongside a list of music legends as they strut their stuff for Prostate Cancer UK’s movement for men, Men United.

The incredible line-up joining Kenney at the high-octane event he hosts at Hurtwood Park Polo Club in Surrey includes Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall, Procol Harum, Lisa Stansfield, Andy Fairweather Low, Nik Kershaw and Steve Harley. The concert, which Kenney and his wife Jayne run in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, will be held on 13 June and there are more acts still to be announced.

As well as raising awareness of the disease, which kills over 10,000 men in the UK every year, the stars will be paying tribute to their friend, the seventies glam-rock singer,Alvin Stardust, who lost his own fight to prostate cancer last October.

In 2014, the event - now in its second year - featured the surprise reunion of drummer Kenney with The Who for the first time since 1988, as well as one of Alvin’s final public performances before his death.

Kenney was inspired to organise the concert following his own diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2013. He comments;

“Rock ‘n’ Horsepower is about getting together with your mates and rocking out to great music, all in aid of Prostate Cancer UK. This year is all the more poignant for me as it follows the death of my dear friend Alvin from prostate cancer last year. As a man who has had prostate cancer himself, I know the huge impact the disease can have, not just on guys, but on their families as well.

“We’ve got some legendary names already lined up for this year with some top acts still to be announced for what promises to be a great day.”

The day will also involve a polo match and there will be a number of high performance super cars on display.

Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK said; “Last year’s Rock ‘n’ Horsepower was a total blast, and we’re over the moon it’s back for a second year. With an awesome line-up already confirmed, it’s set to be an amazing day that will also pack a big punch in the fight against prostate cancer.”

“It’s important to remember that it’s not just about the music, and that by buying a ticket and getting your mates along as well, you’ll be helping to beat prostate cancer.One in eight guys in the UK will face a prostate cancer diagnosis like Kenney did and it kills one man every hour. Kenney has been terrific in not only raising funds, but also in raising awareness by sharing his own story and encouraging guys to wise up to their own risk.”

This year’s Rock ‘n’ Horsepower follows the launch of Prostate Cancer UK’s latest recruitment drive for Men United. This summer the charity is calling on the ever growing Men United movement to get together with their mates and make it count by doing something to help beat prostate cancer.

Bishop continues; “Men United is our movement for everyone who believes men are worth fighting for. The latest phase, ‘Men United: Keeping Friendships Alive’ is all about men getting together with their mates and doing something great together to help beat prostate cancer, and what better way to do that this summer than by coming along to this year’s concert!”
