Community in Langley Come Together to Organise Recycling Event

Residents living in Langley, Middleton, have been working with officers from Recycle for Greater Manchester to plan and host their own recycling event.

On Saturday, 29 March, from 12-3pm, the Demesne Community Centre, Asby Close, Langley will be full of activities and stalls being ran by the community to help their neighbours to recycle better.

The area of Langley was chosen as the focus for a European Union LIFE+ funded Up and Forward campaign aiming to get local residents talking to each other about their opinions on recycling household waste. By using the skills and talents of local residents as much as possible the event is set to be filled with a variety of fun activities.

and Regulation, said: “It’s great that the community in Langley have come together to really take ownership of this recycling event. I hope everybody has a fantastic time learning about how best to recycle and minimise what we send to landfill.”

Visitors can expect to take part in seed planting and crafts workshops. This will provide excellent gifts for mother’s day. Additionally there will be face painting expert for the children and cookery demonstrations by Cracking Good Food, showing how to waste less by using up leftover food. Furthermore local sporting ambassador Phil Gallimore will be running various sports activity sessions using recyclable items.

The grand finale of the day will be the announcement of the recycling sticker design competition winners by our recycling super hero. Thanks to the cooperation of Bowlee Park Community School, the Up and Forward team has been able to successfully engage with the younger residents of Langley and raise awareness through the delivery of an interactive assembly and meetings with their student eco council.

Recycle for Greater Manchester’s Up and Forward Team have also recruited and trained 14 recycling ambassadors all from the community of Langley. The training has taught them to become beacons of recycling knowledge, allowing them to aid members of their community with any problems they experience which prevent them from recycling. Each of the 14 ambassadors has volunteered their own time to help improve awareness and spread recycling messages throughout the local community.

Joanna Collins, eco coordinator from Bowlee Park Commiunity School, said: “This has been a great project to be part of. Not only has it aided us in reaching the recycling element of our own eco schools project it is brilliant to be part of a campaign which takes on board the opinion of actual local residents of all ages.”
