Press release -

Pay by Direct Debit for Peace of Mind

Rochdale Borough Council is encouraging residents to start paying their council tax by Direct Debit.

Currently around 60 per cent of residents, around 55,000 households, pay using this method, covering 77 per cent of the amount due.

Councillor Allen Brett, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “Like many local authorities, Rochdale Borough Council is working hard to make sure it can continue to provide front line services by collecting as much council tax as possible. Having a high number of Direct Debit payers is one way the council can improve its collection performance.”

There are many advantages to using Direct Debit:

  • It's guaranteed (money is immediately given back from your bank in the event of an error);
  • It gives peace of mind (payments are made automatically, so bills are never forgotten);
  • You stay in control (you’ll know when and how much money is going out each time).

As Direct Debit is effective, the Council offers a range of payment dates and options – monthly (available on 1, 9, 15, 19 or 25), weekly, fortnightly or four-weekly.

It’s quick and easy to sign up for Direct Debit, with only one simple telephone call. Residents should please ring 0300 303 8870 with their council tax reference number and bank details (sort-code and account number) and in a just few minutes, they can be signed up to pay their council tax by Direct Debit. Once it’s processed, they'll receive an amended bill with their new payment details.
