Press release -

Philosophy Coffee group is a hot topic

Residents of the borough who wish to explore some of life’s great questions are being welcomed into the warm arms of the Philosophy Coffee group.

The group meets once a month to challenge, debate and ponder fundamental philosophical themes over a cup of hot coffee.  They’ve been operating for more than a year and are now looking for fresh opinions and perspectives to pour into the collective pot.

Richard Powell, the new group leader, majored in philosophy at Lancaster University and expressed his delight in taking over the group:

“I’m very happy to be leading the group. The members we have already will guarantee a different experience each time we meet.

“All views are listened to, explored and debated and we offer a friendly environment to discuss topics that wouldn’t normally come up in day to day conversations.

“While discussing ethics, the human mind, time, perception and much more, we frequently fluctuate from the relevant to the obscure to the downright ridiculous and back again.”

So if you consider yourself a modern philosopher keen to explore questions of knowledge, existence and rationality, or quite simply fancy a warm beverage and some stimulating conversation, then the Philosophy Coffee group is for you.

Linda Fisher, Acting Chief Executive and Head of Corporate Services:

“Groups like these are what make Rochdale Borough Libraries so wonderful. It’s a great initiative to get people interested in philosophy and a chance to discuss new and topical debates.”

Rochdale Central Library is home to the unique Maskew Collection of classic literature and philosophy, the gift of Annie and Frank Maskew, a Rochdale couple who shared a passion for reading and thinking. They originally met in Rochdale Library and left a sum of money to be used on resources and events related to literature and philosophy, to ensure classic works are available for future generations.  Consequently, members of the Philosophy Coffee group, or anyone else with an interest in this area, have a wonderful selection of books to choose from.

The group meets on the fourth Saturday of every month at 2pm in Rochdale Central Library, room G11 on the ground floor, next to Bean Café. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 27 September.
