Coppercoat: Coppercoat Countdown to Official Start of the Clipper 2017-18 Race

Coppercoat, the Official Antifoul Supplier for the Clipper 2017-18 Race begins a countdown to the start on August 20th, 2017 as the last Clipper 70 is re-launched, after having Coppercoat applied.

Coppercoat is the first provider of long-lasting antifoul to partner with the Clipper Race, following the successful application of Coppercoat to Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Globe winning yacht, Suhaili in addition to the Clipper 68 training fleet.

Unlike traditional antifoul paints, Coppercoat is made from a combination of solvent-free epoxy resin and high purity (99%) recycled copper making it the strongest copper based antifouling available. Coppercoat exposes active copper to protect the yachts surface from any fouling organisms that the Clipper fleet will endure during the race around the globe. In addition, the smooth surface provided by Coppercoat will deliver less drag from its long lasting clean hull, which will achieve better performance during the eleven-month competition.

In previous years, the Clipper Race fleet has always been lifted from the water halfway through the race in Sydney, Australia for antifoul reapplication. However, with a typical active lifespan of ten years or more, Coppercoat removes this need for a reapplication of antifoul which will have a massive impact on the race logistics, whilst providing the benefit of long-term reduced costs.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston explains: “I am really pleased to welcome Coppercoat as our first ever Official Antifoul Partner. We have been very impressed with Coppercoat’s success on our Clipper 68 training fleet and are confident its impressive antifouling technology will help get our Clipper 70s Around the world more efficiently.”

Ewan Clark, Coppercoat Director, says: “We are very proud to be the Clipper Race’s first ever Official Antifoul Partner. This is a fantastic opportunity for Coppercoat to showcase its durability in the world’s longest ocean race. Coppercoat will eliminate the need for an antifoul reapplication during the race and improve sailing performance due to the cleaner and smoother hull surface.”

The Clipper 70s have just completed the process of its refit in Gosport in preparation for the next race edition. Each of the twelve ocean racers has been lifted and refitted, with Coppercoat antifoul applied.
