Sodexo Prestige Pays Homage to the Sandwich

The convenience of the sandwich sometimes detracts from quite how delicious they can be! To pay testimony to this great invention, Sodexo Prestige is marking British Sandwich Week (12-19 May) by announcing the winners of its own competition to find the perfect British sarnie.

The competition, launched this year to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the sandwich, saw sixty sandwich lovers from all areas of the company enter their creations. Prestige London’s winning entry was ‘The East End Wide Boy’, created by head chef at Henderson Global Investors, Ben Tamlyn. The mustard and dill Boules bread, pastrami, Swiss cheese, pickled carrot and Russian dressing will now be sold at all London outlets catered for by Sodexo Prestige.

The England and Wales region was won by general manager of HSBC Tankersley, Debbie Cundy. I think it’s fair to say that Debbie’s ‘Peppery Joe’ sandwich has been met with universal approval! A sumptuous smoked mackerel fillet with watercress, rocket and crispy streak bacon on bloomer bread will now roll out across the HSBC regional businesses.

Kelly Gordon was the Queen of Scots with a creamy free range egg, spring onion and salad cream sandwich on farmhouse grain bread. The head chef at Blair Castle in Pitlochry will see her sandwich served across over 100 Sodexo Prestige locations throughout Scotland!

Congratulations to everybody involved and a particular thank you to our expert judges including Paul Rhodes, the artisan baker from Greenwich, who supplies breads and pastries to all London sites.

Although it is believed that the principle of filling two pieces of bread with some kind of filling dates back to 9000BC, it took 10,000 years and the celebrity of the 4th Earl of Sandwich to give it a name. Since then the sandwich has evolved beyond recognition and here are a few of our pictures from the competition to show you just how far it has come!
