A stunning image by British photographer Nick Dolding is today announced as the winner of both the Open Portraiture category and the UK National Award at the 2018 Sony World Photography Awards.

Beating hundreds of thousands of entries worldwide, the winning work Emile was selected by an expert panel of judge for two prizes: firstly, as the best single image entered by any photographer worldwide to Awards’ Open Portraiture category, and secondly as the best single image by a British photographer entering any of the Awards’ ten Open competition categories.

As an Open category and National Award winner, Nick Dolding receives the latest digital imaging equipment from Sony. In addition, the winning work will be published in the 2018 Awards’ book and shown at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London from April 20 – May 6.

The photographer will also attend a London Awards ceremony on April 19, competing against the nine other Open category winners to become the Open Photographer of the Year, winning$5,000 (USD).

Produced by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards is the world’s most diverse photography competition. The 11th edition saw a record breaking 320,000 submissions by photographers from more than 200 countries and territories, presenting some of the world’s finest contemporary photography captured over the past year.

Nick Dolding - Open Portraiture category and UK National Award winner

Dolding is an advertising photographer with over 30 years’ experience. From 2000 he moved studios to Shoreditch and started photographing people, where he found the vibrant and creative community very inspiring. He has travelled extensively in his career and has worked on high level campaigns for many of the best known brands in the world. Dolding has previously been shortlisted in numerous international awards.

Describing the winning work, Dolding says: “In May 2017, I shot Emile on location in London, when I was commissioned to shoot stills for a commercial campaign. The campaign took its inspiration from Wes Anderson's ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’. Emile's styling was so fantastic I couldn't resist shooting a portrait of him. In this image I wanted to retain the humour but have him looking aloof and ‘hoity’.”

The photographer continues:“I'm delighted to have won such a prestigious award and it's all the better that I achieved it with this image because Emile is one of my favourite shots from 2017. I actually have it as the home screen image on my phone. I never tire of picking up my camera and having my image chosen from so many entries across so many countries, really is the best incentive for me to carry on doing what I love.”

The success is announced today alongside the winners all 63 National Awards, and the 10 categories of the Awards’ Open competition. The overall and Professional category winners of the Awards will be announced April 19. For more details visit www.worldphoto.org
