Chris Goodwin wins British Paraduathlon Championships

Reigning world champion Chris Goodwin started the 2014 season in the best possible style at the end of March by winning the TRI6A class at the British Paraduathlon Championships at the Rockingham Speedway in Northamptonshire.

The athlete from Bittering, near Southampton, finished the 5km-run, 20km-cycle and 2.5km-run circuit in 01:00.22, saying afterwards, “It’s nice to get a victory under my belt this early in the season and it bodes well for the rest of the year.”

He later added, “Really pleased with this race. Venue and conditions were perfect. Preparation was good, including nutrition. I felt strong all the way around and it was well paced. An excellent start to the season.

“I allowed everyone to blast past me at the start of the run and gradually but surely pulled them back and took the lead by the end of the first lap. I was something like a minute ahead at the start of the five-lap cycle. Again paced it so we built up the speed throughout and our last lap was the fastest.

"A u-bend allowed us to see easily who was behind us and we were gradually being caught. At the dismount line another tandem pulled up beside, carrying Iain Dawson. 

"Transition went well and Iain was just about two seconds ahead but I was the stronger runner and quickly overtook him. It was then a case of making sure no one caught me up. A hard nine minutes and 30 seconds later I crossed the finishing line."
