Duchess of Cambridge meets SportsAid athletes and mentors at Home Nation reception in Glasgow

SportsAid's Patron the Duchess of Cambridge is today meeting some of the rising stars of British sport at a reception hosted by the charity at SSE's Home Nation House in Glasgow.

During the reception the Duchess will visit mentoring sessions led by tennis star Laura Robson, former world champion open-water swimmer Keri-anne Payne, Glasgow 2014 Team Wales captain Aled Davies MBE, and 2002 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Steve Parry. She will also see rower Joshua Armstrong, 16 from Hamilton, and cyclist Jack Carlin, 17 from Paisley, give live demonstrations of their sports.

Other sporting heroes expected at the reception are former world and Commonwealth champion swimmer James Hickman, London 2012 Paralymic sprinter Sally Brown and world champion track cyclist Becky James.

The 15 rising stars who will be at the reception include three Glasgow 2014 competitors: javelin thrower Joe Dunderdale, 21 from Sheffield; freestyle swimmer Rachael O’Donnell, 18 from Charlestown; and para-swimmer Thomas Hamer, 15 from Rawtenstall, who on Saturday set a new British record to win a silver medal in the S14 200m freestyle.
