Information Technology, the New Hot Career

StepStone poll: Two thirds of the people we asked think working in IT can be cool

Brussels, October 16th 2012 – 51% of the people who took part in our European survey already believe it is cool to work in IT, and 17% think it will become so in the near future.

Gone are the days when IT people were thought of as nerds.

When we asked people in Europe if IT was the new career of choice, 68% of people responded positively.

Not everyone felt like this, though. 21% of the people we asked think that working in IT used to be exciting but isn’t any more. And 11% believe it isn't cool and never will be.

It is in Sweden and Germany that the IT sector is the most popular. 76% of Swedes consider it cool or think it will soon become so, and 70% of Germans share their view.

The Netherlands has the highest percentage of people (25%) who feel that excitement about IT belongs to the past and that it is no longer cool to work in that sector.

Ralf Baumann, the StepStone CEO, comments: “IT is everywhere. Yet it still remains a challenge for many organizations to attract the talented IT professionals they need.”

To help meet this challenge, StepStone and different local sponsors (Spar, Smals, Brose,...) have therefore decided to organize an IT&Telecom campaign mid October. This initiative will help candidates find the job that suits them, and help companies find great matches for their open positions.
