Stroke Association statement on UK research funding for stroke
Online journal BMJ Open has published a story that the funding for stroke in the UK is too low.
Dr Dale Webb, Director of Research and Information at the Stroke Association, said:
“Stroke can be devastating. It is the leading cause of complex adult disability and the second largest cause of death worldwide. We can conquer stroke, it is both preventable and treatable. However, the current amount of money spent on research into stroke is wholly inadequate.
“The global burden of stroke, including premature death, long-term illness and disability, is projected to more than double by 2030. If the level of research funding remains the same, we will not be ready for the challenges that a growing and ageing population will bring. We urgently need to address this impending crisis by prioritising investment into stroke research.”
