Postwoman set to conquer 30,000ft challenge for Stroke Association

Carol Walthew, a postwoman from Cumbria, is taking on three gruelling physical challenges this year in aid of the Stroke Association.

Starting with a 10,000ft sky dive in Lancaster on 5 April, Carol will be raising money for Royal Mail’s Charity of the Year, to raise vital funds for stroke survivors across the country.

She’ll then take on the Great North Swim (10,560ft) and a mountain climb in the French Pyrenees (10,141ft) in June, with the aim of raising £1,000 for the charity. Her fundraising total will then be matched penny for penny by Royal Mail, thanks to their matched giving scheme.

Carol said: “Both of my grandmothers died as a result of strokes, so the cause is very personal to me. I’ve taken on charity challenges before, but never anything this intense! This time I’m hoping to get as many people as possible behind me to support the Stroke Association and change the lives of people affected by stroke.”

Louise Lawless, Community and Events Fundraising Manager from the Stroke Association added, “Every year there are approximately 152,000 strokes in the UK. That's one stroke every three and a half minutes. It can have a huge effect on you and your family, but thanks to people like Carol, we can help give stroke survivors their best possible recovery.”

Gary Grange, Community Investment Manager at Royal Mail, said: “It’s fantastic to see fundraisers like Carol supporting our Charity of the Year and doing everything they can to help us to raise vital funds in aid of Life after Stroke Grants. In the next two years, we want to raise at least £2 million for the Stroke Association.”

The Stroke Association was chosen as Royal Mail Group’s Charity of the Year after receiving almost 40,000 staff votes. The company aims to raise at least £2 million for the Stroke Association over the course of the partnership. Every penny raised will help the charity provide Life After Stroke Grants of up to £300 to help 10,000 stroke survivors. These grants fund equipment to give stroke survivors more independence and support as they take their first steps back into the community.
