Stockport group celebrates five years of vital support for stroke survivors

Stockport Stroke Moving On Group is celebrating five years of helping stroke survivors on their road to recovery.

The stroke support group meets each Monday at Kimberley Street Day Centre in Stockport from 1:30-3:30pm, and welcomes anyone who has had a stroke, along with their family and carers. More than 20 members meet at the sessions to enjoy talks from local speakers, activities and quizzes, as well as days out. The group takes part in canal boat trips, ten pin bowling and even enjoy an annual trip to Llandudno.

Group members marked their fifth anniversary on Monday 18 September with a celebratory party, where they enjoyed a buffet and cakes, complete with karaoke.

Ray Garner, Vice-Chairman of Stockport Stroke Moving On Group, said: “We had a smashing afternoon with lots of laughs, singing along and plenty of cake! It’s vital that stroke survivors have support throughout their recovery, and the group is a lifeline for many people in the Stockport community. The group has helped many stroke survivors throughout their recovery by enabling them to share their stories and experiences, and chat to other people in a similar situation.

“Our group welcomes anyone who has had a stroke, along with their partner or carer if they wish. We’re always looking for new members to join in, and anyone interested in getting involved is welcome to get in touch.”

Joyce Booth, Life After Stroke Coordinator at the Stroke Association, said: “This special anniversary event gave the group the opportunity to celebrate the difference they make every day to the lives of stroke survivors and their families. We really appreciate the important role of our clubs and groups, and the vital work they do in their local communities.”

Stockport Stroke Support Group meets each Monday at Kimberley Street Day Centre in Stockport from 1:30-3:30pm. For more information about stroke, ring the Helpline on 0303 30 33 100 or visit www.stroke.org.uk.
