The Church of Sweden is allocating SEK 1 million to immediate measures for the victims of the earthquake in Nepal on Saturday and is preparing to send specialists in psychosocial work.

The earthquake that struck the western part of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, the strongest in the region in 81 years. The devastation is huge, the death rates continue to rise and people are in great need. Hospitals are overcrowded, thousands of people are homeless and forced to sleep on the streets.

The Church of Sweden is already active in Nepal through the international ACT Alliance network and is also ready to send staff at short notice to provide psychosocial assistance. Those affected are in most urgent need of food, water, blankets, clothing, medicine, tents and psychosocial support. Also required are search teams and sniffer dogs to look for victims.

The Church of Sweden’s international mission and diaconia is appealing for donations for the victims of the earthquake. Text the word NEPAL to 72905 to donate SEK 100. You can also donate via PG 90 01 22-3 or BG 900-1223; mark your donation “NEPAL”.
