Tech Start-Ups Faced With Rising Cost of IT Skills

  • Average tech professional salary has hit £38.185 per year
  • Developers in highest demand
  • Apprenticeships and graduates may be the answer

Tech starts up are facing an additional challenge on top of the usual tasks of  building a client base, a reputation and paying the bills that most new companies have to contend. It was revealed that the average wage for technology professionals nationally has reached £38,185 per year.

This is fifteen percent above the national average for skilled workers and the salary is being driven up by the much publicised IT skills shortage. With the number of new IT positions being advertised likely to increase faster than the supply of new IT professionals the wages for the skilled developers that IT firms need is likely to continue to increase.

This is great news for those lucky enough to be experienced, skilled programmers in languages which are currently in big demand such as Java, Python, Perl and SQL. It is not so lucky for the small IT firms and tech start-ups that have need of these skills but cannot stretch to these high salaries.

The UK IT Association (UKITA) is promoting a number of schemes which it believes can help to reduce this burden on start-ups or small and medium sized businesses.

The University of Wolverhampton are regional administrators for the STEP scheme which is perfect for companies based in the Midlands.  STEP is a first class placement programme which allows you access to graduates at affordable prices and with a variety of options available to suit your business needs. The scheme has proven to be very popular and a very high percentage of companies turn the placements into permanent positions. The University also runs the Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Programme (KEEN) for companies that are looking to run an innovative project of up to 21 months.

Another alternative if you have more time to train an employee is to run an apprenticeship. E-skills and the National IT Partnership offer help and support in recruiting and training apprentices. Apprentices represent a quick way of plugging the IT skills gap and because you are training them they can be moulded exactly to your company’s needs.
