Virgin Trains wins Apprenticeship Development Scheme at 2015 UK Rail Industry Awards

Virgin Trains has been selected from 200 entries to receive the Apprenticeship Development Scheme award at the 2015 UK Rail Industry Awards.

The judging panel, made up of experts from across the Rail industry, was impressed with how Virgin Trains is developing apprentices through the RedTrack programme.

The Virgin Trains RedTrack programme is an undergraduate scheme, in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). The programme currently supports 10 young people who work full-time for Virgin Trains whilst completing a BA (Hons) in Business Management and part of an industry recognised certificate from the Institution of Railway Operators(IRO) during a three-year fixed-term contract.

Virgin Trains RedTrack is the only undergraduate scheme in the Rail industry. The programme highlights Virgin Trains’ commitment to growing talent through investment in young people, who are presented with a range of opportunities and experiences in a business environment whilst being supported through their degree studies.

Amanda Hines, Head of People Management for Virgin Trains, commented: “Our people are so important to us and the RedTrack programme has allowed us to develop some new, really talented, members of the Virgin Trains team. We are really proud of all of them and of winning this highly respected award which we feel reflects our commitment to the programme and our people.”

About Virgin Trains

Virgin Trains is the brand name of Virgin Rail Group (VRG), which is owned by Virgin Group (51%) and Stagecoach (49%). Virgin Trains has operated the West Coast passenger train franchise since 1997, serving key UK cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. In June 2014 the Department for Transport (DfT) awarded VRG a new franchise until at least April 2017.

Virgin Trains is committed to delivering a high speed, high frequency service, offering shorter journey times, more comfortable travel and excellent customer service. We provide the most frequent long-distance rail service in Europe (London - Manchester and London – Birmingham, both every 20 minutes).

Since 1997, Virgin Trains has introduced over 70 new trains at a cost of £1.5 billion. The service carries more than 32 million passengers a year and Virgin Trains employs approximately 3,290 staff.

Virgin Trains customers consistently rate the company as one of the top long-distance rail franchise operators in the National Passenger Survey (NPS) commissioned by industry watchdog “Passenger Focus”.
