Press release -

American Golf putts Turnberry on the map

They often say that there’s no such thing as luck in golf, and American Golf, one of Europe’s top golf retailers, has left nothing to chance when choosing the next location for their new television advertising campaign – the stunning Turnberry Resort in Ayrshire.

The dramatic advert stars Scottish pro, Ross Leeds from Glenfarg in Perthshire as well as American Golf Store Manager and PGA Pro, Ricky Gray from East Kilbride.

Voiced by world-renowned Scottish actor and golfer, John Hannah, it is the unmistakable rolling hills and sandy dunes of Turnberry - perhaps best known for the famous ‘Duel in the Sun’ between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson in 1977 which catch the eye.

VisitScotland, in partnership with Aberdeenshire Council, is also clubbing together with American Golf on sales promotion activity within the VisitScotland Brilliant Moments spring campaign, which offers people the chance to stay and play in Aberdeenshire - a region boasting some of the oldest and finest links and parkland golf courses in Scotland.

The Ryder Cup takes place at Gleneagles in September and more than 250,000 spectators will attend during the week, with a global reach of more than half a billion. With more than 550 courses across Scotland, no other country in the world offers such a diverse choice - from James Braid-designed courses, to coastal links and Open Championship venues, Scotland is truly a golfer’s paradise.

Whether it's a visit to the spiritual home of golf at St Andrews to play a round on the oldest and most iconic course in the world, or to Speyside to experience golfing in Malt Whisky country, you’re sure to find the perfect place to tee off in Scotland.

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland said:

“Choosing the outstanding Turnberry Resort as the location for this beautifully shot advert is just further evidence that the eyes of the golfing community, and indeed the world, are all focused on Scotland in 2014.

“This year, Scotland will confirm its position as the Home of Golf when it hosts the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles, in addition to welcoming the world alongside the Commonwealth Games and Year of Homecoming – it is a hugely exciting year and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to get involved.  I’ll see you on the golf course!”

Daniel Gathercole Head of Marketing at American Golf added:

“Scotland is the undisputed Home of Golf, so where better to film our new advertising campaign?  There are so many great courses to choose from, but Turnberry, as one of the most iconic destinations in the world, was our final decision.  Anyone who has played here will know how beautiful and challenging the course is and this combination gave us a lot of scope to work with”.

Alongside the TV advert, there is also a 60 second version of the advert on American Golf’s YouTube channel and on the website www.americangolf.co.uk
