East Lothian on the tee in August

The East Lothian coastline will be in the golfing spotlight in August with three high-profile golf events taking place in the space of just three weeks.

The region will play host to its second European Tour event in as many years when the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play tees off at Archerfield Links while the Boys Amateur Championship at The Renaissance Club and Muirfield and the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Seniors Open at Archerfield cap a thrilling three weeks in an area known as Scotland’s Golf Coast.

The events will seek to draw in spectators from outside the region to boost the local economy as well as provide a fantastic shop window to the world, with the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play in particular benefitting from worldwide TV distribution in 160 territories, to 400 million homes, including live on Sky Sports (UK), The Golf Channel (USA) and CCTV (China).

It follows hot on the heels of East Lothian hosting its first-ever European Tour event last year with the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane in 2015, won by US Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler, which provided an boost in excess of £5m to the local economy.

Both the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play and the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Seniors Open are being supported this year by the EventScotland team within VisitScotland’s Events Directorate. Scotland’s Golf Coast is also a key element in the country’s golf tourism offering, which is worth in excess of £220m to the annual economy.

“These high profile sporting events have an immense impact on tourism in East Lothian and surrounding areas, attracting golf fans from across Scotland and beyond. 

“Events are a vitally important part of the local visitor economy with the ripple effect of event tourism felt in shops, hotels, restaurants and a wide variety of other businesses across the region.

“Golf tourism is worth £220m to the country annually and hosting fantastic events like the ones here on Scotland’s Golf Coast in the coming weeks only enhance further Scotland’s reputation as the Home of Golf.”

Tickets are available for the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play, which will see a top-class field of 64 players on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai competing for the, costing £15 for adults, while children under 18 go free. The strong field consists of six former Ryder Cup players, one Major winner and 42 European Tour winners.

The Scotland’s Golf Coast spectator village has a variety of activities to keep families busy in addition to the top-class golf on show including Segway rides, crazy golf, equipment testing, food & drink tasting, golfing challenges and live music.

Entrance to the Boys Amateur Championship is free while any spectator who buys a ticket to the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play can also attend the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Seniors Open for free by keeping their ticket stub.

    Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design 2016

  • 2016 will shine a spotlight on Scotland’s achievements in innovation, architecture and design through a wide-ranging, variety of new and existing activity.
  • The Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design begins on 1 January 2016 and ends on 31 December 2016 and will build on the momentum generated by the 2015 Year of Food and Drink as well as previous years including Homecoming Scotland 2014, the Year of Creative and the Year of Natural.
