Festival 2014 adds to ‘spectacular summer’ line-up

Following the launch of Festival 2014, a programme of cultural celebrations which will be held alongside the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Liz Buchanan, VisitScotland Regional Partnerships Director, said: “2014 is a fantastic year to come to Glasgow – nowhere else will you find such a unique mix of world-class sport and diverse culture, as well as the many attractions, restaurants and shops that Glasgow is famous for. With more than one thousand performances taking place all across the city, Festival 2014 means you will never be far from the very best in Commonwealth and home grown talent.

“The Commonwealth Games will put Glasgow on the world stage like never before and offers a real chance to attract visitors from far and wide. Excitement is growing for what promises to be a spectacular summer in Glasgow and I urge all Scots to come and be part of the celebrations.”

Scotland is set to welcome the world in 2014 with three momentous events; the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and the year-long Homecoming 2014 celebrations.

  • The VisitScotland Information Centre network is a unique face-to-face channel engaging with around five million visitors and locals each year. Everyone who uses a VisitScotland Information Centre goes on to spend an additional £5.35, generating over £24 million for Scotland’s economy. 
  • According to a recent Deloitte study, tourism employs 270,000 people in Scotland in 20,000 diverse businesses. The same study calculates that the industry contributes £11 billion annually (direct and indirect impact, including day visits) and supports around 10 per cent of employment in Scotland. Almost 16 million tourists take overnight trips to Scotland.
