Film fore

Ordinary Scots are the stars of an extraordinary new film created to welcome The 2014 Ryder Cup to Scotland.

The film, developed by Creative Director Kim Gavin as part of his vision for the opening concert of one of the biggest golf events in the world, takes the audience on an epic journey through Scotland, set to the music of renowned Scottish composer Craig Armstrong.

The film starts in the outer areas of Scotland, taking a picturesque journey towards Glasgow, over glens, weaving through valleys, rising up above the mountains, and sweeping across beaches and lochs.

Along the way, the camera captures real people of Scotland interacting with the landscape around them in their chosen profession or hobby.

Highland Games athlete Jamie Barr can be seen tossing a caber; Painter Hazel Campbell is bringing a castle to life through her canvas; Battle Re-enactor Robert Ballantyne strikes a warrior pose; Director of Festivals Edinburgh, Faith Liddell, stands in the middle of the Festivals’ madness; Scottish musician Ross Martin plays his bagpipes; and kilt designer Howie Nicholsby struts his stuff on the historic Royal Mile.

The concept behind the film is to show that Scotland is a nation of diversity in its arts, culture, history and beauty.  The piece culminates with Craig’s composition entitled 'Escape', when the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, with a chorus of 60 singers takes to the stage.

The film will be shown during the Ryder Cup Gala Concert at the SSE Hydro on Wednesday 24 September. It will be displayed on a special state-of-the-art 100ft -wide screen to ensure the host country comes to life for the audience in the clearest and most colourful way.

Developed by renowned Creative Director Kim Gavin (London 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony), The 2014 Ryder Cup Gala Concert is the curtain-raiser for one of the biggest sporting events in the world – The 2014 Ryder Cup, due to take place at Gleneagles from 23-28 September.

The Concert will unite contemporary music talent Nile Rodgers, Texas, Jake Bugg, Twin Atlantic, Amy Macdonald, Nina Nesbitt, Eddi Reader, Midge Ure and Danny Wilson, on the same stage with Scotland’s leading arts agencies – the Scottish Ballet, Scottish Opera, National Theatre of Scotland and RSNO.

A strong feature of the evening will be the presentation of The 2014 Ryder Cup teams, with the USA and Europe players appearing on stage together for the first time with their captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson ahead of the epic golf showdown at Gleneagles.

Kim Gavin, Executive Producer of the Show, said: “Scotland is renowned for its spectacular beauty, remarkable culture and its warm, friendly people. It was important to me that all these elements were captured within this bespoke film not only to inspire the audience, but excite them – rousing the senses through sight and sound.  Craig Armstrong’s definitive music is a fitting soundtrack to the film and I’m looking forward to seeing eyes light up around the audience as they spot well-known faces on the big screen.”

Mike Cantlay, Chairman of VisitScotland, said: “The Ryder Cup Gala Concert is the curtain-raiser for this magnificent golfing event set to take place at Gleneagles, but it is important to remember that all this activity is taking place in this, our Year of Homecoming. Celebrating Scotland, our home, and inviting people to “come on in” has been a huge part of 2014 and this is captured in Kim’s unique concept for the concert.  Real people, real landscapes and real music, history and culture will encourage the audience – both in the Hydro and on television – to discover the real Scotland, and we can’t wait to greet them.”

Geoff Ellis of DF Concerts & Events said: “With this concert we have tried to create an evening where The Brits meets The Proms – a multi artist and multi art form evening with the only opportunity to see The Ryder Cup Captains and teams presented live. The film will be a very important part of the evening, setting the scene for this once-in-a-lifetime event.”

The Concert is a signature event within the Homecoming Scotland 2014 programme delivered by DF Concerts & events on behalf of VisitScotland.  It will celebrate the start of The 2014 Ryder Cup which returns to Scotland for the first time in more than 40 years and for only the second time in its history. The sporting event will take place on 23-28 September at Gleneagles and is supported by EventScotland, the national events agency and a directorate of VisitScotland, and Ryder Cup Europe.
