Golf trade mission tees off

VisitScotland is this week leading a mission to Mallorca to enhance the reputation of Scotland, the Home of Golf as a leading tourism destination.

The national tourism organisation has taken 15 Scottish golf businesses to the International Golf Travel Market (IGTM), the world’s premier trade event for the sport.

Team Scotland is attending the event in Son Termens, Mallorca (14-17 November) with partners representing a wide range of golf tourism businesses including The Gleneagles Hotel, host venue of 2014’s memorable Ryder Cup and Carnoustie Country, which includes the Carnoustie Championship course, host venue of The Open Championship in 2018.

Sure to be a big draw, the VisitScotland stand will display the world-famous Claret Jug, won by Henrik Stenson at this year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon.

With over 600 golf tourism suppliers and 350 buyers attending, representing 65 countries, IGTM 2016 will see a record number of scheduled appointments take place between golf tour operators and exhibitors during the four-day event.

Malcolm Roughead, Chief Executive of VisitScotland said:

“We are delighted to once again have a strong Scottish presence at IGTM. The event is a fantastic opportunity to drive the message to buyers around the world that Scotland truly is the Home of Golf and the world’s best golf tourism destination.

“We have much to look forward to on the Scottish golfing calendar with The Open returning to Carnousite in 2018 and The Solheim Cup at Gleneagles in 2019 among a number of world-class golf events taking place in the next few years. It is also the Year of History, Heritage & Archaeology in 2017, which lends itself perfectly to promoting golf in Scotland, the historic home of the game.

“IGTM gives VisitScotland and our partners the chance to carry out hundreds of valuable appointments – meeting face-to-face with tour operators and golf businesses from around the world. We look forward to sharing knowledge and continuing our support of the burgeoning golf tourism industry ahead of another exciting period for golf in Scotland.”
