TV show will be tourists' cup of tea

A new children’s television series which features an iconic building in Princes Street Gardens could be great news for tourism in Edinburgh, according to VisitScotland.

The Head Gardener’s Cottage doubles as the home of Great Aunt Lizzie in Teacup Travels, which was broadcast on CBeebies for the first time on Monday 9 February, and features in all 25 episodes of the series. The series is funded by the BBC and Creative Scotland.

The national tourism organisation hopes the cottage will inspire the kind of pilgrimages by families seen with other Scotland-set children’s TV series such as Balamory and Katie Morag.

Jenni Steele, Film and Creative Industries Manager at VisitScotland, said: “Teacup Travels will be beamed into millions of homes every day, and I’m sure that young children captivated by the series will love to see Great Aunt Lizzie’s Cottage in real life. The Head Gardener’s Cottage looks stunning and the fact it is situated so close to Waverley Station means it is easily accessible for visitors to the city.

“Research shows that 40 per cent of visitors to the UK are inspired to go somewhere after seeing it on film or on television, so Edinburgh’s starring role in Teacup Travels could be terrific news for tourism in the city.”

Filmed and produced entirely in Scotland by Edinburgh-based Plum Films, Teacup Travels follows the adventures of Charlotte and Elliot, who imagine themselves following in their Great Aunt’s archaeological footsteps. Every adventure is inspired by a real artefact from a museum somewhere in the UK. The first series runs every weekday for five weeks during the prime 5.45pm viewing slot.

Great Aunt Lizzie is played by BAFTA-nominated actress Gemma Jones, who plays Madam Poppy Pomfrey in the Harry Potter films.
