The Solar Eclipse

20 March, across Scotland

The moon will travel in front of the Sun on Friday 20 March causing skies across the UK to go dark between 8.30am and 10.45am. The best place to experience this will be in the north of Scotland on the islands of Skye, Shetland, Orkney and the Outer Hebrides. The further north people travel the more of the sun will be covered, on the islands of Lewis there will be up to 98% coverage.

Stars in their eyes at New Lanark

21 and 22 March, South Lanarkshire

New Lanark’s annual Stargazing LIVE event returns for a weekend of cosmic discovery on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March. Running in association with the well-known BBC programme of the same name, this year’s event will coincide with the BBC’s programming and the next visible total solar eclipse (see above). After a hugely popular event last year, New Lanark will run the Stargazing LIVE event over two nights so even more eager stargazers can get involved. Visitors will be able to try out Stargazing on Scotland’s largest Roof Garden at New Lanark, where the Clydesdale Astronomical Societywill be on hand to explain the skies or show visitors how to use their telescopes. Fully Fashioned: The Pringle of Scotland Story

Scotland is the iconic birthplace of the knitwear industry. It was in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, that Pringle of Scotland became one of the first luxury knitwear manufacturers in the world.Marking Pringle of Scotland's 200th anniversary, this free exhibition traces the history of the company from a small hosiery firm making undergarments to an international fashion brand known for its outerwear. Using rare pieces of early knitwear, iconic fashion garments, archival records and film footage, the exhibition traces the evolution of one of the world's oldest fashion brands and explores the continuing relevance of knitwear to the modern wardrobe. New craft beer festival

11 April, The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen

An inaugural craft beer festival is brewing up a storm as it gets set to take on Aberdeen this spring. North Hop Aberdeen, which has been created following the success of the Inverness craft beer festival, North Hop, will be taking place in the heart of Aberdeen on Saturday 11 April 2015 at The Lemon Tree with craft beer, cider, gin, cocktails, street food, music and more. Coinciding with Scotland's Year of Food & Drink this festival will showcase a key selection of Scottish breweries, bars and foodies to their full potential and will introduce the folk of Aberdeen and beyond to new and exciting products. Wild Spring Festival

4 April – 4 May, Dumfries & Galloway

Visitors can experience the great outdoors in Dumfries & Galloway and discover one of the most surprising and naturally inspiring regions of Scotland during the Wild Spring Festival. From frogs and fishtails to badgers and buzzards, and from red deer and reptiles to otters, ospreys, bats, moths and the charismatic red squirrel, Dumfries & Galloway is teeming with wildlife in spring. This month-long festival is a celebration of spring, featuring almost 100 wildlife events. Find out more

Edinburgh International Science Festival

4 – 19 April, Various Venues, Edinburgh

The Edinburgh International Science Festival has taken its own twist on Scotland’s Year of Food & Drink by organising a mini-festival celebrating the science of food and drink. A series of innovative events explore the important role science plays in the culinary experience. Scottish producers, suppliers, artisans, mixologists, scientists and chefs will be on hand to talk about everything from the neuroscience and psychology of taste perception, to slow food and cutting-edge molecular gastronomy. Live experiments will include exploding Easter eggs, chocolate flame throwers and stunt bunnies fired into space. Find out more

The Alliance Trust Cateran Romp

13 – 14 June, Perthshire

Polly Murray, the first Scottish woman to climb Everest, is the new Ambassador for the Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp. Now in its fifth year, The Yomp has become a buzzword for an endurance experience like no other. Hiking up to 54 miles in 24 hours, participants will cross some of Scotland’s most breathtaking countryside following the historic Cateran Trail, raising money for ABF The Soldier’s Charity.
