MAEN, a new Dutch-Swedish watch brand releases first model

Dutch-Swedish watch brand MAEN recently released its first model. The brand name is taken from an old Dutch word meaning Moon and is inspired by the Dutch ship "Halve Maen" that discovered New York City back in 1609. As a tribute to this unique brand name, the founders of this Stockholm based brand present its debut collection comprising of classic Moonphase watches.

Launched by two Dutch guys living in Stockholm, MAEN focusses on designing watches that offer exceptional quality and design elements mostly seen on watches in the high-end segment. Their first model is priced at around 300 USD and comes in 4 variations, two models in stainless steel case with frost white or midnight blue dial and two models in stainless steel gold plated case with charcoal grey or ivory white dial.

The moonphase is considered as the most poetic complication in a wristwatch. The moonphase complication provides a subtle connection with our past, when people were fascinated by the movements of the moon. It guided their travels, their seasons and ultimately led to the creation of our modern calendar. Our lives are no longer closely tied to themoon’s orbit, but this makes it all the more fitting to own a moonphase watch: its timeless charm and whimsical artistry remind us that we’re all just spinning through space, mere cogs in a bigger clockwork.

The brand highlights the classic moonphase indication in a simple and elegant dial. Dressed in a classic stainless steel case with a mixed brushed and polished finish, the timepiece proudly displays the powder coated dial featuring faceted hands for hour and minutes, polished indexes and a lovely moonphase indication. The face of this classic watch is protected with a sapphire crystal. The screwed caseback of the watch features the laser engraved brand logo at the centre surrounded by a pattern symbolising the movement of the Moon around the earth. Inside each classic Moonphase watch beats a Swiss made quartz movement manufactured by Ronda. The timepiece comes fitted with an Italian leather strap in black, brown or midnight blue shade depending upon the version.

Although the word maen stands for moon, MAEN will also come with models without a moonphase dial.

• We found the name MAEN very fitting for our brand. The Moon is a symbol of time and it is an old Dutch name referring to the “Halve Maen”, the Dutch ship that changed the course of history by exploring the unknown.
