All roads lead to Llanrwst. North Wales conference venue becomes the centre of Social Enterprise in Wales on October 1st

Welsh social entrepreneurs and business experts from across the UK will converge on Glasdir in North Wales on Wednesday 1st October for the annual Social Enterprise Wales Conference. This year Wales Co-operative Centre is running the conference in partnership with Bangor University’s Menter Iontach Nua initiative.

The Social Enterprise Wales Conference has the theme of ‘Education, Learning and Growth’ and will address a number of pressing issues facing Welsh social enterprise: growth and development; profile raising and communication and the need to inspire a new generation of social entrepreneurs.

Growth and development will be addressed two well respected keynote speakers: Matt Stevenson-Dodd who is Chief Executive of Street League and Professor Brian Morgan who is Director of the Creative Leadership and Enterprise Centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Issues around education, marketing and profile-raising will be discussed by Jonathan Bland, founder of Social Business International and Karen Lynch, Chief Executive of Belu Water.

The final keynote session will feature Askar Sheibani, the Welsh Government’s Entrepreneurship Champion and Bill and Moira Lockitt of G2G Community Interest Company discussing the challenge of attracting young people to social entrepreneurism.

Each of the keynote sections will be interspersed with opportunities to engage with experts on specific topics such as mentoring and development, marketing and communication and engaging young people. Respected workshop leaders from across the UK include Shaun Doran from Bulky Bob’s, Andrea Ladeira from Care2Save and Richard Catherall from Katarsis Ventures. Workshop speakers from closer to home include Anne-Marie Rogan of Swansea YMCA, Menna Jones from Antur Waunfawr, Manon Llwyd Rowlands of Big Ideas Wales, Nicola Hemsley from Organised Kaos and Andrew Davies of the Wales Co-operatives and Mutuals Commission.

The conference will begin with introductory addresses from Derek Walker, Chief Executive of Wales Co-operative Centre and John Hughes, Vice Chancellor of Bangor University.

Chief Executive of the Wales Co-operative Centre, Derek Walker welcomed the range of different speakers who are appearing at this year’s event,

“The social enterprise sector in Wales is vibrant, dynamic and constantly delivering new training opportunities, real jobs and real growth to communities throughout our country.

“The Wales Co-operative Centre’s Social Enterprise Support programme has directly created around 250 jobs in Wales by supporting the development of over 180 new social enterprises and helping more than 400 existing social enterprises  to grow and expand.

“The support from our Conference partners at Bangor University’s Menter Iontach Nua initiative has enabled us to deliver a programme that will be of interest to both aspirant and existing social entrepreneurs. We have speakers from large scale social enterprises, government, academia and Welsh social entrepreneurs who have important businesses lessons to share. This year’s event offers plenty of opportunity for practical learning and for networking with experts in the sector.”

Tom Barham, Project Manager of Menter Iontach Nua said:

“Our project has taken Welsh and Irish social entrepreneurs through a transformational Masters programme, and many hundreds of others through the insights of Masterclasses.

“We have learned ourselves about the tremendous work being undertaken by social enterprise in Wales and Ireland.  It is important that we learn from experts, but particularly that we learn from each other and share our successes, failures and experiences.

“We hope that the value of education for the sector will come across in this fantastic conference.”

The conference is run in partnership between the Wales Co-operative Centre’s Social Enterprise Support Project and Bangor University’s Menter Iontach Nua initiative. The Social Enterprise Support Project is funded by Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund.

Menter Iontach Nua is funded by the European Union’s Interreg 4A Ireland Wales Programme and is a partnership between DCU Ryan Academy, Bangor University, NorDubCo and Business in the Community Wales.
