Clothes re-use consortium launches in Colwyn Bay . Consortiwm ailddefnyddio dillad yn lansio ym Mae Colwyn

A new community sector consortium has launched a textile sorting facility in Colwyn Bay.

Draig Tex is a collaboration between three north Wales social enterprises, Crest Co-operative, Antur Waunfawr and Seren Ffestiniog Cyf. It has been created with the intention of ensuring that the value of re-usable material is not lost to the waste stream and is kept in Wales, directly benefiting Welsh communities.

The consortium has been brought together with support from the Wales Co-operative Centre Succession and Consortia Project.

By joining forces, the three consortium members have established a Welsh-based sorting centre that can service a wide geographical area. Individually, the partners also handle other materials and are part of a wider sector of community reuse and resource management operators. The new textiles consortium is a step forward for that sector in Wales, increasing the scale of operations in the collection of usable materials alongside the other items they handle such as furniture and electrical appliances.

Rhian Edwards is project manager of the Succession and Consortia Project at the Wales Co-operative Centre which supported the three organisations to develop their plans and launch the new organisation. She commented,

“Congratulations to the three social enterprises for recognising and responding to a market opportunity in their area. Draig Tex is an excellent example of how individual organisations can utilise their collective capacity to develop an exciting new regeneration project which will provide employment and training opportunities for local people and real local growth”

The ERDF and Welsh Government funded Succession and Consortia Project supported the three social enterprises to examine and assess each of the potential delivery models and business structures for the new business. They facilitated and brokered the whole partnership development process, explored governance and stakeholder issues and provided briefings for legal support commissioned to pull together the partner agreements.

Sharon Jones is Chief Executive of Crest Co-operative, one of the three partners involved in Draig Tex. She said,

“Any charity or social enterprise that collects textiles can now choose a Welsh third sector service that will offer competitive market rates for most of these materials. The aim is to help keep the value of textiles collected in Wales as close to local communities as possible and to reinvest in the Welsh social economy, rather than see wealth leak away into a global market, as often happens now.

“We are grateful for the support we have received from the Wales Co-operative Centre in helping us build the framework we needed to implement this new business approach”.

Existing textile collection services don’t always say how they make their profits and where the collected materials are headed. Draig Tex aspires to build more transparency and ethics into the supply chain. This will be a challenge in a well established global market, but by securing a Welsh base grounded in community sector values, the consortium believes it is achievable. The consortium partners’ ambition is to provide a secure and ethical service on the doorstep in Wales.

The consortium aims to collect and export 1000 tonnes of textiles in its first year to export to markets in Africa, Pakistan and Eastern Europe. Draig Tex forecasts a £1million annual turnover with three quarters of revenue raised going straight back into the Welsh social economy in payments to third sector and charitable organisations. The remainder will be spent on managing the facility and employment of 11 staff. No money will be taken out of Wales.

Draig Tex has received £100,000 capital funding through Cyfenter to support purchase of equipment. Each of the 3 organisations has also put £10,000 of their own funds into the consortium.

Consortiwm ailddefnyddio dillad yn lansio ym Mae Colwyn

Mae consortiwm cymunedol newydd wedi lansio cyfleuster dethol tecstilau ym Mae Colwyn. Mae Draig Tex yn ffrwyth cydweithrediad rhwng tair menter gymdeithasol yng ngogledd Cymru, sef Crest Co-operative, Antur Waunfawr a Seren Ffestiniog Cyf. Cafodd ei greu gyda'r bwriad o sicrhau nad yw gwerth deunyddiau y gellir eu hailddefnyddio yn cael ei golli i'r ffynhonnell wastraff ac yn cael ei gadw yng Nghymru, gan fod o fudd uniongyrchol i gymunedau Cymru.

Daeth y consortiwm ynghyd trwy gefnogaeth Prosiect Olyniaeth a Chonsortia Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru.

Gyda'i gilydd, mae'r 3 consortiwm sy'n aelodau wedi sefydlu canolfan ddidoli yng Nghymru sy'n gallu gwasanaethu ardal ddaearyddol fawr. Yn unigol, mae'r partneriaid hefyd yn ymdrin â deunyddiau eraill ac yn rhan o sector ehangach o weithredwyr rheoli ac ailddefnyddio adnoddau. Mae'r consortiwm tecstilau newydd yn gam ymlaen i'r sector hwnnw yng Nghymru, gan gynyddu graddfa gweithrediadau sy'n casglu deunyddiau y gellir eu hailddefnyddio ochr yn ochr ag eitemau eraill y maent yn ymdrin â hwy fel dodrefn ac offer trydanol.

Mae Rhian Edwards yn rheolwr prosiect ar gyfer Prosiect Olyniaeth a Chonsortia Canolfan Cydweithredol Cymru a fu'n cefnogi'r tri sefydliad i ddatblygu'u cynlluniau a lansio'r sefydliad newydd. Dywedodd,

Mae'r Prosiect Olyniaeth a Chonsortia sy'n cael ei ariannu gan Gronfa Datblygu Rhanbarthol Ewrop a Llywodraeth Cymru wedi cefnogi'r tair menter gymdeithasol i archwilio ac asesu pob un o'r modelau cyflawni a strwythurau busnes posibl ar gyfer y busnes newydd. Buont yn hwyluso proses ddatblygu'r bartneriaeth gyfan, yn archwilio materion llywodraethu a rhanddeiliaid a darparu sesiynau briffio ar gyfer cymorth cyfreithiol a gomisiynwyd er mwyn dwyn ynghyd cytundebau partner.

Y nod yw helpu i gadw gwerth tecstilau sy'n cael eu casglu yng Nghymru mor agos â phosibl at gymunedau lleol ac ail-fuddsoddi yn economi cymdeithasol Cymru yn hytrach na gweld cyfoeth yn llithro i farchnad fyd eang, fel sy'n digwydd yn aml erbyn hyn.

"Rydym yn gwerthfawrogi'n fawr y cymorth yr ydym wedi'i gael gan Ganolfan Cydweithredol Cymru wrth ein helpu i ddatblygu'r fframwaith y mae ei angen arnom i weithredu'r dull busnes newydd hwn."

Nid yw pob gwasanaeth casglu tecstilau yn nodi sut y maent yn gwneud eu helw a lle y mae'r deunyddiau sy'n cael eu casglu yn mynd. Nod Draig Tex yw datblygu rhagor o dryloywder a moeseg i'r gadwyn gyflenwi. Bydd hyn yn her mewn marchnad fyd eang sydd wedi'i hen sefydlu, ond trwy sicrhau lleoliad yng Nghymru wedi'i wreiddio yng ngwerthoedd y sector cymunedol, cred y consortiwm bod hwn yn bosibl. Uchelgais partneriaid y consortiwm yw darparu gwasanaeth diogel a moesegol ar garreg y drws yng Nghymru.

Nod y consortiwm yw casglu ac allforio 1000 tunnell o decstilau yn ystod ei flwyddyn gyntaf er mwyn allforio i farchnadoedd yn Affrica, Pacistan a Dwyrain Ewrop. Mae Draig Tex yn rhagweld trosiant blynyddol o £1 filiwn â thri chwarter o'r refeniw yn mynd yn syth i economi gymdeithasol Cymru mewn taliadau i'r trydydd sector a sefydliadau elusennol. Bydd y gweddill yn cael ei wario ar reoli'r adnodd a chyflogi 11 o staff. Ni fydd dim arian yn mynd y tu allan i Gymru.

Mae Draig Tex wedi derbyn arian cyfalaf o £100,000 trwy Cyfenter i gefnogi prynu offer. Mae pob un o'r tri sefydliad hefyd wedi rhoi £10,000 o'u harian eu hunain i mewn i'r consortiwm.
