Opportunity to rebuild Swansea, pixel by pixel

Fans of the building sensation that has taken over the internet (and many people’s spare time) are being offered the opportunity to use their online building skills to recreate Swansea in Minecraft. Communities 2.0 will be offering Minecraft workshops to Swansea residents at the Libraries Pop Up Shop in the city centre on Saturday November 29th between 10am-12pm and 2-4pm.

Minecraft is one of the best-selling video games of all time. The game allows players to build new buildings and even whole worlds using 3D computerised building blocks. Minecraft is being used extensively in education settings to model building processes and simulate potential changes in real environments.

Delyth Rees from Communities 2.0 who is organising the event said,

“Minecraft is more than just a computer game. It can be used to teach mathematics, building and design and environmental management. Most of all though it is great fun!

“By linking Minecraft to the real world of Swansea we hope to introduce people into some of the potential uses of tablets that they may not have considered as well as offer a fun way of looking at Swansea.

“We hope this fun event will encourage some visitors to consider learning more about ICT by joining one of our drop in sessions or introduction to ICT courses”.

The event runs from 10am-12pm and 2-4pm in the old City Centre Management Office on Plymouth Street next to the Bus Station and must be booked in advance by calling or texting 07823 342301.

The former City Centre Management office on Plymouth Street is being transformed into a place to share ideas and enjoy cultural activities as part of the 'You are Here' project that's led by Swansea Council in partnership with a local group called The Rhizome Collective

Communities 2.0 is a Welsh Government Digital Inclusion Project that is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. Communities 2.0 offers a range of course and drop in sessions for people who would like to learn more about using online services through a laptop or tablet.

Further information about computer courses in the area is available at http://www.communities2point0.org.uk/computer-courses-in-wales or by calling 0845 747 8282
